VNMKV Distributes Trichocards and Agricultural Diaries to Pigeonpea Farmers under the Crop Diversification Project

Emphasis should be laid on cultivating crops that require less water, fewer fertilizers, and have a shorter duration – Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Indra Mani

Under the Pilot Project on Crop Diversification (PPCD), sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, Trichocards and agricultural diaries (‘Krushi Dainandini’) were distributed to beneficiary pigeonpea farmers on 26 October 2026 at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The programme was organized by the All India Coordinated Research Project on Integrated Farming Systems (AICRP on IFS), functioning under Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth (VNMKV), Parbhani. Seeds of the ‘Super Moti’ variety of sorghum were also distributed to the farmers. The project is being implemented at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar during the year 2026–27.

The programme was held under the chairmanship of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of VNMKV, Prof. (Dr.) Indra Mani. Dr. Bhagwan Asewar, Director of Research; Dr. Rakesh Ahire, Director of Extension Education; and officials of the University and the Agriculture Department, including Joint Directors, were present on the occasion.

While addressing the participants virtually, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Indra Mani highlighted the importance of crop diversification, intercropping systems, and allied agricultural enterprises. He emphasized that incorporating a variety of crops into farming systems is essential for increasing farmers’ income and that greater attention should be paid to reducing the cost of cultivation. He also urged farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices by selecting crop varieties that require less water and fewer fertilizers and provide returns within a shorter duration.

Dr. Bhagwan Asewar, Director of Research, highlighted the importance of sorghum and safflower in view of the prevailing drought conditions in Maharashtra. He stated that selecting crops that require less water while also providing fodder for livestock is the need of the hour.

Dr. Kiran Jadhav, Chief Agronomist, briefed the participants on various initiatives being implemented in the Marathwada region under the Pilot Project on Crop Diversification. Highlighting the good performance of the ‘Godavari’ variety of pigeonpea, he provided guidance on important production technologies for the crop. He also explained the proper use of Trichocards and emphasized the importance of crop management during the post-flowering stage of pigeonpea.

The initiative is expected to enhance farmers’ awareness of crop diversification, low-cost agricultural technologies, and appropriate crop selection under water-scarcity conditions, thereby contributing to sustainable agricultural practices and improved farm income.
