A Diwali with Farmers: Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Indra Mani* Extends Hope, Confidence and Support to Farmers Amidst Drought
In an exemplary gesture of farmer-centric leadership, compassion and institutional commitment, the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth (VNMKV), Parbhani, Prof. (Dr.) Indra Mani, chose to celebrate the first day of Diwali with the farming community at Savargaon village, Parbhani. His decision to spend this auspicious occasion amidst farmers, rather than confining the celebrations to conventional festivities, conveyed a profound message of solidarity, hope and reassurance at a time when the farming community is confronting a critical drought situation.
The Seed and Biological Input Distribution Programme for Demonstrations of Rainfed Integrated Farming System, organized under the All India Coordinated Research Project on Dryland Agriculture (AICRPDA), VNMKV, Parbhani, provided an important platform for this meaningful interaction. The programme was organized under the esteemed chairmanship of the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Indra Mani, in the august presence of the Director of Research, Dr. Bhagwan Asewar.
During the programme, the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor interacted personally with farmers, patiently listened to their concerns and discussed the challenges arising from the prevailing drought and limited availability of water. He encouraged farmers to adopt suitable climate-resilient agricultural practices, judiciously utilize available soil moisture and water resources, and explore integrated farming system approaches to sustain agricultural production and farm livelihoods. His reassuring message that "The University stands firmly with its farming community, especially during difficult times" instilled confidence and renewed hope among the participating farmers.
Addressing the farmers, Dr. Bhagwan Asewar, Director of Research, VNMKV, emphasized the need for advance preparedness and long-term strategies to strengthen rainfed agriculture, particularly in Maharashtra and the drought-prone Marathwada region. Referring to the ongoing Rabi season, he advised farmers to prioritize low-water-requiring crops, judiciously utilize available water resources and undertake appropriate seed treatment to ensure better crop establishment and minimize risks under prevailing moisture-stress conditions.
As part of the demonstration initiative, quality seeds of University-developed Rabi crop varieties were distributed to farmers, including Rabi Sorghum – Parbhani Moti, Safflower – PBNS 12 and PBNS 86, and Chickpea – Aakash. Biofertilizers and mineral mixture for livestock were also distributed to promote sustainable crop production, improve nutrient-use efficiency, reduce dependence on costly external inputs and strengthen the livestock component of the integrated farming system.
The initiative assumes particular significance under the prevailing drought conditions, as it seeks to demonstrate practical, low-cost and resource-efficient farming interventions that can help farmers sustain their livelihoods with limited water resources. Through these demonstrations, AICRPDA, VNMKV, Parbhani, is making a concerted effort to translate agricultural research and university-developed technologies into practical field-level solutions for the farming community.
A large number of farmers, including men and women from Savargaon and Pimpala villages, enthusiastically participated in the programme. The prominent dignitaries, village representatives and progressive farmers present on the occasion included:
- Shri Gajananrao Ghatul, Sarpanch, Savargaon
- Shri Gopal Surwase, Sarpanch, Pimpala
- Shri Vitthalrao Ghatul
- Shri Narayanrao Ghatul
- Shri Parameshwar Ghatul
- Shri Uddhavrao Ghatul
- Shri Jadhav
- Shri Hanuman Tarfale
- Shri Ganesh Ghatul
Along with other prominent villagers and farmers.
The enthusiastic participation of farmers reflected their keen interest in adopting the Rainfed Integrated Farming System for enhancing farm productivity, improving farm income and ensuring long-term livelihood security. Their active interaction and appreciation also demonstrated the relevance of the University's field-oriented initiatives in addressing farmers' immediate needs and long-term challenges.
The farmers expressed their heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor for his thoughtful initiative, personal interaction and encouraging words. They particularly appreciated his decision to begin the Diwali celebrations in their company and his assurance of continued institutional support during this challenging period.
The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor's decision to celebrate Diwali with farmers stands out as a unique and inspiring example of compassionate, inclusive and farmer-oriented leadership. His gesture goes beyond a ceremonial visit; it reflects a deep sense of responsibility towards the farming community and reinforces the role of an agricultural university as a dependable partner of farmers, especially during periods of distress. It also sends a powerful message that the true significance of agricultural education and research lies in bringing hope, confidence and tangible benefits to farmers at the grassroots level.
A Diwali with farmers, a gesture of solidarity in times of drought, and a commitment to transform agricultural science into hope, resilience and prosperity for the farming community.
The introductory remarks were delivered by Dr. Anand Gore, Chief Scientist, AICRP on Dryland Agriculture, who highlighted the importance of the Rainfed Integrated Farming System for enhancing farm productivity, diversifying farmers’ income and strengthening resilience to climatic uncertainties in drought-prone Marathwada.
The programme was compered by Dr. Papita Gaurkhede, while the vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Ganesh Gaikwad.
