Various crop varieties developed
through the research programmes of Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth
(VNMKV), Parbhani, have received significant recognition at the central level.
During the 95th meeting of the Central Sub-Committee on Crop Standards,
Notification and Release of Varieties (CSC on CSN&RV) under the Indian
Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), recommendations and approvals were
granted regarding the release and notification of several varieties associated
with the University.
The varieties include TLT-7 sesame,
‘Parbhani Padma’ (CPB 2201) cowpea, ‘Parbhani Superdagdi’ (SPV 2735) sorghum,
MAUS 824 soybean, and NH 22037 Bt BG-II and NH 22038 Bt BG-II cotton.
The meeting was held on 6 April 2026
in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Dr. D. K. Yadav, Deputy Director General
(Crop Science), ICAR. Following presentations by directors, project
coordinators and principal scientists from various institutions, the
performance and characteristics of the respective varieties were discussed
before taking the decisions.
This research achievement has been
supported by the effective leadership and guidance of the Hon’ble
Vice-Chancellor of VNMKV, Prof. (Dr.) Indra Mani. Valuable contributions were
also made by Dr. Bhagwan Asewar, Director of Research; former Director of
Research Dr. Khizar Beg; and scientists working on the respective crops.
TLT-7 Sesame Variety
The TLT-7 (Trombay Latur Til-7)
sesame variety developed through sesame research at the University’s Latur-based
research programme has been included among the centrally recognized varieties.
The variety has been recommended for cultivation in Maharashtra.
TLT-7 has a maturity period of 90–95
days, a 100-seed weight of 3.4–4.0 grams, and an oil content of 45–47 per cent.
Its average seed yield is 7–8 quintals per hectare, and the variety is suitable
for the summer season.
‘Parbhani Padma’ Cowpea Variety
The ‘Parbhani Padma’ (CPB 2201)
cowpea variety, developed through collaborative research by VNMKV and the
ICAR–National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi, has been
included for Maharashtra. The recommendation is based on research conducted at
the Pulses Research Centre, Badnapur, District Jalna.
The major characteristics of
‘Parbhani Padma’ include:
- High-yielding variety with an average yield of 876 kg
per hectare in Maharashtra
- Early maturing, with maturity ranging from 81 to 92
days and an average maturity period of 86 days
- Moderately resistant to Yellow Mosaic Virus
- 100-seed weight of 12.79 grams
‘Parbhani
Superdagdi’ Sorghum Variety
The ‘Parbhani Superdagdi’ (SPV 2735)
sorghum variety has also been included for Maharashtra. The variety was
developed through research at Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth,
Parbhani.
It has a maturity period of 115–118
days and produces 22–25 quintals of grain per hectare under rainfed conditions.
It also has the potential to produce 70–75 quintals of fodder per hectare.
MAUS 824 Soybean Variety
The MAUS 824 soybean variety has
also been included in the centrally recognized list. It has been recommended
for the states of Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.
The variety is associated with the
research programme of the ICAR–All India Coordinated Research Project on
Soybean (AICRP on Soybean), VNMKV, Parbhani. MAUS 824 has demonstrated
excellent performance in the North Eastern Hill Region.
Its major characteristics include:
- Average grain yield of 2,329 kg/ha, which is 10.4 per
cent higher than the best check variety
- Oil yield of 465 kg/ha, 12.6 per cent higher than the
best check variety
- 100-seed weight of 16.5 grams, compared with 10.7 grams
for the best check, representing an increase of approximately 54 per cent
- Large seed size
- Moderate field-level resistance to anthracnose and rust
Considering its high yield
potential, large seed size, higher oil yield and moderate disease resistance, MAUS
824 has been identified for release for the North Eastern Hill Region,
including Manipur, Assam and Nagaland.
MAUS 824 thus combines higher productivity,
large seeds and disease resistance.
Two Bt Cotton Varieties Receive Recognition
The NH 22037 BG-II and NH 22038
BG-II cotton varieties, developed through research at the ICAR–All India
Coordinated Research Project on Cotton, Cotton Research Station, Nanded, under
VNMKV, have also been included in the centrally recognized list. These
varieties have been recorded for Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
NH 22037 BG-II has a maturity period of approximately 160–170 days and an
average yield of 16–18 quintals per hectare. The variety is reported to possess
tolerance to bacterial blight and grey mildew, has large-sized bolls and is
suitable for high-density planting.
NH 22038 BG-II also has a maturity period of approximately 160–170 days and
an average yield of 18–21 quintals per hectare. It is reported to possess
tolerance to sucking pests and leaf spot disease.
National Recognition of VNMKV’s Research
The central-level recognition
accorded to these varieties represents a significant national recognition of
Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth’s research in crop improvement,
varietal development and agricultural innovation.
The continuous research carried out
by various research centres, All India Coordinated Research Projects and
scientists of the University is helping make more productive, adaptive and
farmer-oriented crop varieties available to farmers.
The University stated that the
central-level recognition of these varieties will further strengthen its
efforts in research, technology development and dissemination of agricultural
technologies to farmers, while giving additional momentum to its contribution
to crop improvement and sustainable agricultural development.
