Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of VNMKV, Prof. (Dr.) Indra Mani, Co-Chairs Technical Session; Presents Information on AgriVoltaics Initiatives in Marathwada

The 7th AgriVoltaics World Conference 2026 was held from October 21 to 23, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, marking a significant step towards promoting the integrated use of agriculture and renewable energy in India. For the first time, this prestigious international conference was organised in India, a country in the Global South. The conference provided significant impetus to India’s efforts to advance food security, energy self-reliance and sustainable development simultaneously.

The three-day conference was organised by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, in collaboration with Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUV), and in partnership with Conexio-PSE. The conference was centred on the theme “Powering the Global South.”

The conference aligned with Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Ji Modi’s vision of “Power to Empower,” emphasising empowerment through energy. India’s transition towards clean energy is transforming the agricultural sector, with the objective of enabling farmers to emerge not only as Annadatas (food providers) but also as Urjadatas (energy providers) by producing clean energy. The integrated use of agriculture and solar energy can promote rural entrepreneurship, expand economic opportunities and make farmers’ incomes more stable and sustainable. The conference called upon international stakeholders, scientists and industry representatives to collaborate in expanding modern AgriVoltaics technologies.

The inaugural session on the first day began with the welcome of dignitaries and the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. Shri Santosh K. Sarangi, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, delivered the welcome address and introductory remarks. A film highlighting the objectives of the conference was subsequently screened.

The inaugural session featured addresses by Hon’ble Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan ji and Hon’ble Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Education, and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Shri Pralhad Joshi. A video message from Hon’ble German Federal Minister for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety Shri Carsten Schneider was also screened. Hon’ble Dr. Jasper Wieck, Ambassador of Germany to India, delivered special concluding remarks. Hon’ble Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power Shri Shripad Yesso Naik and Hon’ble Dr. Mangilal Jat, Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), were among the dignitaries present.

Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth (VNMKV), Prof. (Dr.) Indra Mani, co-chaired a technical session at the conference. In his address, he highlighted various initiatives being undertaken in Marathwada through AgriVoltaics research projects. He also elaborated on the university’s ongoing research and contributions to the field, particularly in integrating agriculture and solar energy to achieve a balance between crop production and clean energy generation.

More than 1,200 delegates attended the conference, including over 150 international participants. Dr. Godavari Pawar, Principal Investigator of the AgriPhotovoltaics Research Project operating at Manwat in Parbhani district under VNMKV, also participated in the conference. On the first day, she delivered a presentation on “Plant Growth Analysis in APV Systems.” Students from VNMKV also participated in the poster presentation competition, in which two students were selected to participate in the forthcoming winter workshop.

The participation of international experts, policymakers, researchers, industry representatives, innovators, start-ups and development partners facilitated knowledge exchange, technological collaboration and South-South cooperation. The conference emerged as an important platform for harmonising energy self-reliance with agricultural security.

Special emphasis was placed on integrating science, policy and innovation. The programme included an India-focused special session and two parallel scientific sessions. Discussions covered agricultural innovation, state-level initiatives, crop productivity, policy frameworks, financing models, practical technology applications, climate-resilient agriculture and farmer-centric business models.

The “AgriVoltaics Pitch Hub,” a dedicated platform for start-ups and innovation, showcased technology-driven solutions from the emerging generation of innovators. The initiative created new opportunities for coordination and collaboration among clean energy innovators, start-ups, investors and representatives of global industries.

AgriVoltaics technology enables the integrated use of the same land for both agriculture and solar energy generation. Solar panels can generate electricity while crops are cultivated on the land beneath and around them. This approach has the potential to create rural employment opportunities, encourage local entrepreneurship, increase farmers’ incomes, create favourable microclimatic conditions for crops and provide sustainable livelihood opportunities in the face of growing climate change challenges. By harmonising food production with clean energy generation, the technology is expected to play an important role in promoting climate-resilient agriculture.

The discussions at the conference underscored the view that the future of agriculture will depend on the integrated application of clean energy and digital technologies. The transition from traditional farming to modern, technology-driven agriculture will increasingly rely on the combined use of solar energy, precision farming technologies, smart irrigation, digital tools and innovative business models.

The 7th AgriVoltaics World Conference 2026 is expected to accelerate international cooperation and further strengthen India’s role in making global food and energy systems more resilient, climate-friendly and sustainable.
