VNMKV’s Chickpea Variety ‘BDNG 2020-61’
(Parbhani Chana 17) Identified for the East Central Zone
Average yield of 1,925 kg per hectare; 15.20% higher
yield than Indira Chana-1
The chickpea
variety BDNG 2020-61 (Parbhani Chana 17), developed by the Agricultural
Research Station, Badnapur, under Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth
(VNMKV), Parbhani, has been identified for the East Central Zone by the
National Rabi Pulses Crop Variety Identification Committee under the Indian
Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The variety was recommended during the
meeting of the Variety Identification Committee held on 29 August 2026, and the
revised minutes of the meeting were approved by ICAR on 7 October 2026.
The performance
of this variety in three years of trials conducted under the All India
Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) in the East Central Zone was noteworthy.
During the trials conducted from 2023–24 to 2025–26, the variety recorded a
weighted average yield of 1,925 kg per hectare. In comparison, the widely
cultivated variety Indira Chana-1 recorded a yield of 1,671 kg per hectare.
Thus, BDNG 2020-61 demonstrated a 15.20% higher yield than Indira Chana-1. The
variety also recorded higher yields than the comparative varieties JAKI 9218
and RG 2015-08.
The development
of this variety received significant contributions under the leadership of the
Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of VNMKV, Prof. (Dr.) Indra Mani, and the guidance of
the Director of Research, Dr. Bhagwan Asewar. Dr. Deepak Patil, Chief Scientist
at the Agricultural Research Station, Badnapur, and Associate Dean of the
College of Agriculture, along with Dr. Vishnu Gite and other scientists of the
research station, made valuable contributions to the development of this
chickpea variety.
Major
Characteristics of the Variety
BDNG 2020-61 is
a desi chickpea variety suitable for timely sown, irrigated conditions during
the rabi season. It has a maturity period of approximately 106–110 days. The
seeds are medium to bold in size, with an average 100-seed weight of 24 grams.
Across trials conducted at different locations, the variety recorded yields
ranging from 1,309 to 2,466 kg per hectare. According to the research proposal,
the variety also demonstrated comparatively better performance against major
diseases and insect pests during the trials, in comparison with the existing
check varieties.
Benefits
for Farmers in the East Central Zone
The variety has
been identified for the East Central Zone, which includes eastern Madhya
Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and the western part of Odisha. Its higher yield
potential, relatively shorter maturity period and satisfactory performance
across trials are expected to make it a useful option for chickpea-growing
farmers in this region.
The national-level identification of this variety, developed through the research efforts of scientists at the Agricultural Research Station, Badnapur, under VNMKV, Parbhani, is considered a significant achievement in the field of agricultural research at the university. This development is expected to provide farmers with an additional promising option for enhancing chickpea productivity.
